Why Some Generators Can’t Run Certain Appliances

If you’ve ever plugged an appliance into a generator only to find it won’t start or shuts down quickly, you’re not alone. Not all generators are designed to handle every type of device, and there are important reasons behind this. Understanding these limitations can save you from frustration and even prevent damage to both your appliances and your generator.

One of the biggest factors is power demand versus generator capacity. Every appliance has two power requirements: running wattage (the amount needed to keep it running) and surge wattage (a higher burst of power needed to start it). Appliances like refrigerators, air conditioners, and pumps require two to three times their running wattage at startup. A small generator might be able to handle the running load but fail to supply enough surge power, which causes the appliance not to start.

Another issue is the type of power output. Some sensitive electronics—such as computers, TVs, or medical equipment—require clean, stable power. Traditional generators may produce fluctuating voltage or frequency, which can damage these delicate devices. That’s why inverter generators are recommended for sensitive electronics since they provide stable, pure sine wave electricity similar to what you get from the grid. Without the right type of generator, certain appliances either won’t run properly or could be at risk of failure.

Lastly, compatibility and design differences play a role. Some high-efficiency appliances use advanced electronics that don’t perform well with inconsistent or low-quality power sources. In other cases, the total load you’re trying to run may exceed the generator’s rated output, causing it to overload and shut off. The key to avoiding these problems is matching your generator’s wattage and output type with the specific requirements of your appliances. Checking the power ratings and understanding the surge needs of each device will ensure smooth operation and extend the life of both your generator and your appliances.
